hey , i have a few problems with my explorer that i was wondering if u guys could help me with them . 1st one , my explorer seems to rock back and forth while at idle in park . 2nd problem , my rear drives side door is stuck in lock and the door will not open there fore i can not get it off . 3rd problem , my pin that shows what gear im in is stuck in park , ican still drive it but it always tells me im in park whne im not . any help you guyscan givewill be appricated thanx , o yah i have a 97 4dr explorer xlt .

well, im in now way a mechanic of magnitude, but the 97's are similer to the first generation as mechanical wise. your first problem sounds like the transmission, because mine will want to lunge forward while im at a stoplight, like the car behind me is trying to push me forward. might need to be rebuilt, how many miles?

your second problem sounds likes the linkage inside the door has broken some where in relation to the door lock, and the handles. my passenger back door will not open from inside, and the handle just sticks out.

the 3rd problem just sounds like the gear box the moves the selector around. plastic inside, and grease will gunk it up (on mine, anyway). pretty simple to replace, i think. on mine, the gear selector box is mounted to the instrument cluster via some torx screws. go to a salvage yard, and get another one for 50 cents. btw, mine does work, haha. j/p. anyway, hope this helps

thanx

yah my explorer has 85k miles on it which i dont think is that bad for a 97 , but i dont know. I also hae 20 inch rims and i was wondering maybe that had something to do with the werid swaying back and forth ? any ways thanx for your imput im kinda dumb whne it comes to the engine part of the truck and any information will help .

for the shift indacator there is an adjustale wire.
I can not recall off hand if it is under the knee bolster or in the steering colum.
Either are easy acess. You'll see a thin wire comming out of a threaded plastic tube with a thumb wheel.
That is your adjuster. Some where below that is a loop where it connects to the shift arm.
Hopefully this will be of some help
