Lee,
From your profile you live, eat, and breathe audio. So, hook us up. Have you hooked your X up? What have you done? Don't say nothing much, b/c I won't believe you. I have clean 500 watts in my BMW, 300 in my fiance's Jeep, but have done nothing to my X. What is a good/ cheap way of replacing my DIN & 1/2 cassette player with CD? Any simple improvement for the sub in the back? Where can I hide amps well? Don't say you don't know, b/c you have thought about it.

What is the simpliest/cheapest way to improve our X systems?

my old system in the explorer was:
four 15" Orion XTR subwoofers
Kicker components in the kick panels
and pioneer 6X8s in the doors
i used Audiobahn amps and caps to power everything

now i'm working on a new setup. i cant give all the details, mostly because i dont know everything that i want yet. so far:

two 12" Audiobahn AW1206Q subs powered by an Audiobahn A2200HCQ amp.
Audiobahn 5.25" components in the kick panels powed by A275HCQ amp (might run another set of components off it in the rear). i might go with Audiobahn 6.5" three way speakers for the front doors and two ways for the rear doors. i'll probably power them off the A275HCQ also, just to keep thing pretty simple.

But, i might actually put those subs in my mazda 626 and go with AWT12's for the explorer.

now, about your explorer..

do you want a single or double din headunit?
a single din will be cheaper and have more features (most of the time). also the detachable face is a good thing to have, and since i havent seen a double din with it single might be the way to go.

if you want an inexpensive single din headunit that will perform, check out the new 2002 sony's. you could get a great headunit (3 sets of 5.5 volt outputs, freq response to 10HZ, high sig/noise ratio, etc...) for under $200.
pioneer make some great double din headunits, but it'll cost a little more.

a simple way to upgrade the stock subwoofer and have it perform damn good is:
get a Q-logic stealth enclosure
Orion XTR 10" svc
Orion cobalt 50.2 (i think that's the model number, it is rated at 200X1 rms. actual rating will be higher). the amp is very small and efficient and will easily fit behind the plastic panel in the rear. the sub and amp combo will cost you about $180 or 190 at www.sounddomain.com

but a seperate box and sub setup in the cargo area will hit harder of course, since airspace is an issue.

good luck with your system
