I'm new to this site, I have a question. I currently have a 2003 Ford Explorer 196k mileage. The timing chain went out. I might be purchasing a another explorer 2007-2010 just wanted to know the pros and cons? And does does model have a rear timing chain?

Same engine. Any 4.0sohc from a mustang, ranger, explorer, sport trac, and land rover can be interchanged with each other. Any year will work. different plastic on top, other than that they are the same ****ty design.

That sucks, I don't mind any of the explorer engine it's just the timing chain, paid $1,200 to replace the back chain now the front chain gave way, would of thought Ford changed it up alil bit

Sure is, but the good thing is with it being in so many models, you can get a drop in from a wreckers for a decent price. There are lots of them around. I'm truly surprised no aftermarket companies have an offering of a metal guide for these yet. It would truly make the engine bullet proof, as it is the guides that cause the problem.

Yeah I agree, with my 03 explorer it would rattle when starting, so it finally gave way. Trying to find a new engine but it's actually hard to find them. Every place I call same answer "We don't have a good one" shows you how crappy the timing chain is. Was hoping to avoid that (plus back chain) with the new model. I even heard the 2011-2013 hard even worse
