I'm looking at a '92 Explorer which has an indicated 82,000 on it, but I suspect it's the second time around.

I know nothing of these trucks, and will use it as a second vehicle for bad weather. I live in NW OryaGun and turned '65 y/o last week. Been a car tinkerer all my life, but no experience with computer controlled ones.

I hang out at www.1776x2 where I am admin and www.GunBroker.com.

I'm looking for all the ups and downs that I can find out about this rig.

If I get it, y'all will get real tired of seeing me around.

So, any hints about things to look out for, or to check before I buy, would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to be here, and I'm happy I found your really nice site.

I see that it needs a left front door panel - light tan, has leather interior.

Any source for the panels, or complete leather re-covers for the front seats ??

Thank you.

Welcome! :)

Cheeech - Did you get my PM ??

I was talking to some guys that claim to know about cars, and they said that the '82 Ford 4.0 V-6 ate cam bearings and the GM 4.3 was much more reliable because it's a V-6 based on the small block chev V-8.

Any truth to that stuff ??

Thank you.

Doug

I emailed you back saying the vin wasn't correct. You have 18 characters. Suppose to be only 17.

Does it have a auto tranny? If so I'd be leary unless there are plenty of donor fords at the local junk yards.

Well your talking about a soon to be 18 y/o explorer. I would say just about every single thing on it has passed it's service life. 82k probably is not the right mileage, I would doubt 1,082k because that would average about 75k a year for 17 years. I would ask some questions because someone has played around with something. A records check should give you an idea of the actual mileage. Just to give you an idea of what they go for I see a 93 on craigslist in my area, 127k miles for $900 interior intact. If the engine, tranny, electrical and suspension checks out I'd offer $600ish myself. The seats will cost you about $60-80 each at Junkyards for leather, a leather kit will run you about $300+.

I also find 2nd gen's 95-01 with bad Tranny's for $400-500 all day long if you want to handle a tranny swap and walk away for under $1k.

Sorry, Cheeech.

I sent you a corrected PM.

Thank you.

nitro71 - Yup, it's an auto, alright.

xCali - I'm too old and physically messed up to do much wrenching anymore. Any big stuff that needs to be done, I will have to pay to have done.

I'm going to use the rig as a backup for my little gas miser car when the weather is bad. Prolly won't put 1K miles on it a year.

The outside and inside are pretty choice except for the driver's door panel, and the leather skins on the front buckets.

It will also have my GOB in it, as well as other stuff in case the SHTF.

I'm pretty worried about the fate of our Country, near-term.

Long-term don't matter, 'cause I won't be around anyways.

I bought a '75 RamCharger new and swapped a 440 into it a couple years ago to replace the wore out 318, and passed it on to SonDave - 3rd of 4 Sons - recently.

I also have 2 Daughters and 3 x wifeys - redheads all.

Beware of redheads.

Thanks all.

Doug

Cheeech -

Thank you for running the VIN. I guess no news is good news.

I'll be over at the dealer's today and drive the truck. See what I think of it and will be back on the Forum to report my findings - and prolly ask some more questions.

Man, am I glad I found this place.

You guys are great !!

Thank you.

Doug
