I reached the 450,000 mark! Maybe by summer it will be 500,000!!!. The mechanic told me that the V6 Explorer is known for problems in the heads or valves and that is not a long lasting engine:shoot:. I'm thinking of an engine swap when problems arise:dead: , any sugestions? Are there any adapters available?

5.0 is the most common swap and there is info about it on the site.

I'll be putting in another v6 here shortly. We have 343k miles on our X. I did crack the heads once and the #1 cylinder has been 30 psi lower in compression than all the others for years.

I saw a little oil in the water last time I flushed the cooling system (no water in oil) so I'm working on another v6 motor to just drop in.

it seems to be the exact opposite...the 4.0 always seems to last forever(knock on wood)..the tranny is a diffrent story.

I'll 2nd that.. We are on our 5th transmission (now running a 700r4). So far so good.. just about 60k miles on the 700r4 so far.

I'll third it. This "mechanic" doesn't seem to know crap from crisco. I was in the automobile industry for over seven years, and saw a lot of very high mileage first gen X's running strong. With the exception of the heads(which is a preventable failure as long as you do a few things to make sure the engine doesn't overheat) and the trannies (again, something that is preventable as long as you do not use them for heavy towing) these things are known to run for at least 200K. Hell, you have 450K on your truck!!

I agree as well the 4.0 is one strong long lasting motor and yes the tranny sucks but so far I have had good luck with mine. knock on wood

The 700r4 is not an easy drop-in...is it?

I'm on my third Trani at 277K miles.

not exactly a drop in. Not too bad though.. total cost was a little more than having someone rebuild the a4ld again. My total investment in the 700r4 conversion was about $2400, and I like having it.

there are a few threads about the conversion on this site.
