high pitched whining noise..

ok heres the deal.. i cant figure this out but ive got a few bits of info so hopefully you guys can help me

When i am in some sort of gear such as Drive, reverse etc.. and im on the brakes or rolling at idle i hear a high pitched noise comign from under the car.. it sounds like its coming (directly from under the car where the drivers seat is).. sounds like air is seeping through something.. but when i start driving the noise goes away or if i have it in park it goes away as well.. it dosen't affect performance in any way i just hate noises.. most people probably wouldnt even notice it but i do and i would like to quiet my vehicle.. anybody have any idea what it could be? is something possibly going out?

Could be the mother-in-law??:)

If you only hear the noise when you apply the brake, the noise is probably the brakes. I'd take it up to carX or somthing and get it checked out. However if you hear it when your not braking, I'm clueless. Could be a belt or the water pump???

Hope you figure it out!

I had a similar noise but I'm not sure if the conditions were the same. I noticed the noise while the car was in gear, especially when rolling to a stop (lower vehicle and engine noise). I replaced the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and put on new tires. The noise was still there. It sounded almost like a chirping or whistling sound. The problem ended up being a bad u joint. The noise was rotational and I fixed the problem short term by buying some transmission leak sealer and spraying the ujoint with it while rotating it. It lasted for around five months. Eventually I'll replace it but it has not started it again. Hope this helps someone with this noise as it is very annoying.
