hey, i have a 1999 x, 4.0 SOHC and im looking to make my own intake out of some exhaust piping, surrounded by hot water pvc with some sort of cone filter on the end and im wondering about a few things...first off, if anyones done this on this engine let me know how it worked...secondly, theres 2 hoses that come off of the factory intake after the mass airflow sensor if ur going from filter to throttle body. im wondering what these are and if i need to find a way to place them in the same place on the intake id liek to make...thirdly, ive read some things about doing this and the mass airlfow sensor running the engine too rich, but if you disconnect ur battery and reset ur computer it will "re-learn" the correct mixture. Im wondering if this is true because if it isnt, and the computer wont "re-learn" the correct mixture, im not gonna risk frying my cats...thanks for the help if you can give me any

The problem with aftermarket intakes with high-flow filters is that oil from the filter can sometimes find it's way onto the MAF sensor filament wires over time and cause the engine to run lean. To rememdy this, you should only oil the filter lightly, and periodically clean the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner.

Yes It's been done before. Searching here will find pics and tons of info on it. PVC will heat soak bigtime, possibly warp over time, I wouldn't recommend using it.
Even hot water PVC is not designed for under engine hood applications, it's designed to carry hot water.

My 94 OHV has item leading off from the tube between MAS and TB..it's the breather tube. The other in your SOHC case is possibly the IAT sensor but don't quote me on that I'm not SOHC expert...
bottom line is you need both ports on any custom tube you would want to make.
