hood latch failure internal lever

greetings fellow enthusiasts,

I have an issue with my interior hood latch release lever (2004 Ford Explorer xlt), It is not working now it has prior to the present time, I pull the latch and nothing happens I have someone holding the latch in open position and try to budge the hood again nothing disengages or lossens to allow access, any Ideas anyone, oir another point to open access?

Same thing was happening to mine. I sprayed the mechanism with WD-40 and it has been working flawlessly for over 2 years.
