Thanks for posting that pic, I had no idea you could do that and I always worry about the cable.
One question, where is the other end of the wire rod going to? Does it have a hook to grab and pull on?

gmanpaint, thanks for the picture showing the emergency hood release. I never knew there was one. After discovering this, I find I can just use a screwdriver to reach in and work the latch. Thanks again. I have wondered what I would do if the cable ever broke.Remove the 2 small bolts holding the handle to the dash. Now that it's loose, you can pull it towards you to take up the slack from being stretched. Hold the mount with one hand, and pull the handle with the other. That should work. Replace the cable or install a a cable/wire/rod to the emergency release tab on the hood release latch itself.
