I am not only a newbie on this site but also to the wonderful world of the Ford Explorer. After several years with a mildly modified F150 4x4 ,it was time to move on to something new.Having always admired the Explorer, especially of the '92 to 94 era,I went searching and found an all stock '94 Sport 4.0 standard. It was a lady driven ,one owner jem with less than 150000km(90000mi) and absolutely flawless body and interior.Exactly what I was looking for to build up over the next few years.I am presently building a roof rack similar to some that I have seen on some trucks on this site, and would like to begin with bigger more agressive tires.I was looking at BF goodrich M/T 31-10.5 and was wondering if any of you had put a similar tire on a stock platform and if so did you experience any rubbing in the wheel wells?A lift kit will have to wait until the financial situation allows for it.

Welcome to the site. The largest tire you can fit on a gen 1 X (91-94) without rubbing (guaranteed) is 30X9.5. There are people on this site that are running 31X10.5. Some of them have no rubbing, some only mild rubbing mostly when the wheel is cranked onto full stop and others could not get them to fit at all due to spring sag. Best bet is to find a place willing to test fit them for you or wait until you have the money for a lift. You only need a 2" lift to fit them without rubbing. That's what I'm saving up for now. ;)

InDaRubarb,

Hey, a fellow Niagaran! Ha Ha. I am in Welland. I used to live in Chippawa. If that is the case where Bashman said your spring sag may keep you from putting bigger tires on your truck, there is always Niagara Spring on Bridge St. I had a Bronco II that has severe sag in it, I took it there and they resprung the springs and added an extra leaf to each side for quite a decent price and did it in about an hour or two. After that, my truck rode like a champ. You could barely push the rear end down on her. Unfortunately that was back about 6 years ago and I can't remember how much they charged me, but it wasn't bad.

What kind of roof rack are you going to attempt to build for the truck?

Always room for another! LOL, Make sure to use the Search Feature. Just trying to keep you out of trouble. LOL Again, Welcome!

I most definately appreciate the feedback. Its good to know that there are other explorer fans in my area such as Hoppy who was quick to reply to my post.I do not belive that there is much in the way of spring sag on my '94.It has been pampered since new by the woman who owned it previous to me and it did not even have a bumper hitch so I doubt that it has ever hauled more than $100 worth of groceries.Would off-set rims take care of the rubbing problem? Also, would the 4.0 with a standard trans. turn anything larger than 30" tires without changing gearing?

I've got almost the exact tires you're looking to get (31x10.5 BFG A/Ts) and have no problems with them
