My engine will just be loud and so rough during accel and it sounds like a rod is coming out and hitting my hood. Yes, Its that bad! I have cleaned the IAC and got my fuel injectors cleaned. I just don't know what to do or what my problem could be. Do any other guys with the ohv have this problem? It just sounds like to me that my engine is running extremely rough. I mean it runs smooth but there is a constant amount of knocking and it comes into the cabin. It can't be my borla because thats smooth but something in my engine has a problem. Any suggestions?

HI,
Crap, I thought I was the only one with that problem. i know exactly what your talking about. Just bought a 98' Sport with the 4.0 OHV engine and have noticed a sound very similar to yours. Knocking sound from lower end of the engine and increases as you acellerate. Only happens under load (truck in gear). Seems like it also lacks power, right? Mine dosen't sound as serious as yours but kinda gets annoying after a while. I would also like to know what the heck this is too. Oh yea, it has 75,000mi.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Maybe mine isnt as bad as i am making it out to be, but i have 80k, and a 96 xlt, so if we could possibly get some solutions it could help both of us

just out of curiousity, do you guys feel a slight vibration (maybe, in the gas pedal) along with this noise? i dont know what youre problem, but im having a problem with my 98 sohc, that might not be too different from this.

Mines about 80% cured thanks to the stock airbox going back into the truck.

Count me in as one having the knock. It's definitely in the bottom end of the engine. It gets louder the more I accellerate, especially going uphill. I don't notice any lack in power though.

If you guys figure out a cure, be sure to let me know too.

I had that problem too in my 98 SOHC. They replaced the engine and now its gone. I dont know what to make of it.

Heh. Not exactly the answer I was looking to find. My wallet can't stand something like that.

The thing is Ford replaced it on THEIR DIME because the recall ruined it. Just something to think about.

yep im with you on that one, except mines in the steering wheel, when i accel. the steering wheel vibrates. like if your rotors are bad, if ya know what i mean. that kind of vibration. anyone know what im talkin about?

MMMM HMMM Exactly!

Hey, maybe a supercharger would solve the problem!

Ive heard of several Rangers with the same engine that have a Diesel type knocking sound . It's been called "Marbling" by the posts Ive seen . I dont know the fix for it . If the knock is more a pinging , clean the mass air flow sensor . It's in the air filter housing on most X's and or attached to the airbox itself . Im sure someone has a link around here to MAS cleaning instructions .
Ford from what Ive read has replaced engines to stop the knock and within 10,000 miles the knock returns . Check with your local dealer about options for repairs . Id also call Ford Corporate and raise heck before heading to the dealer if your X is out of warranty .
This isnt a isolated problem and I forsee Ford having problems with buy-backs or Governemnt forced recalls .
From what Ive seen it's 98 and up SOHC engines . The older 4.0L's like my 95 are immune .
