How can I keep the shift knob from coming off?

Drill and tap the shifter the drill a hole though the knob.

This is what I did on mine, except the knob already has a hole in it (under the little disc with the shift pattern on it).

Use a Dremel or something to clear away the plastic "fins" on the underside of the disc so it clears the screw head.

My T case shift knob comes off all the time. I've thought about removing the shift pattern plate thing, drilling and tapping the shift lever, then putting a screw to hold the knob on. Been too lazy to work on it though, its easier to complain about it coming off.

The first time it came off I replaced the knob. Note that the inset with the shift pattern is a separate part that they will try to charge you for; it just pops out and you can reuse.

When the second one came off I used JB WELD. That lasted four years, then the knob came off again. What happens is that the plastic in the knob crazes and cracks. A good reason why a set screw will not work. Note that the JB WELD is now firmly in the splines and will not come out.

After that I got a knob that lights up in the dark from Autozone. I had to grind off some of the stick to make it fit but it's all metal and has a set screw. And the grandkids think it's kewl.

You were supposed to trade it in after 3 years. :p: :D

I use a rubber band on mine. Just wrap the band around the splines and tap the shifter back in place. The rubber will degrade and has to be replaced every year or two.
