So my steering wheel is now very stiff on my 03 Ford Explorer XLT and I am considering changing the steering wheel pump and I have everything I need. I was wondering if anyone has actually changed their steering wheel pump. I know I have to remove the belt and then remove the condenser cover and the pulley for the power steering pulley and remove the hoses and finally the bolts that are on the housing to remove the pump.

But I am wondering how difficult is this really? Should I let my mechanic do it instead of me? By the way the fluid is full and I strongly suspect it is the pump that has failed.

Have you tried changing the fluid?

No haven't tried changing the fluid, I have heard that has fixed some people's problem with the power steering but how? I don't understand the theory behind that. Even though I have never changed the fluid in 12 years how does new fluid change it?

And where can I flush it out best? Is there a drain line that is the best location to drain it?

What makes you think it's an issue with the pump vs the rack and pinion or a clogged hose? In my experience, a clogged hose (they deteriate from the inside) creates resistance.

Is the pump whining?

Here is a YouTube video. I like this guys channel and he has lots of good videos on simple repairs and procedures

The pump is not whining. Thanks for the video...
