I own a 1992 explorer 4x4, with the 4.0L pushrod V6. Everything on the ex. is stock, and I was wondering what kind of mods I can do to maximize my power out of it. I realized how underpowered I was when I went wheeling with a buddy of my in the Wyoming mountains, and sensing the strain of the motor going through the snow. Any suggests would be helpful.

Intake, exhaust, bore it over...

How much money you looking to spend? Anything that can be done on any other engine can be done to the OHV 4.0, FOR A PRICE....

I would start by getting a K&N air filter...and maybe some headers and a cat-back system...

Really the sky is the limit...it all depends on how how your wallet will take you...:)

First of all - welcome to the greatest x-site around
below are a couple of my early posts that may help you.
In the few months i've been playing here, i've learned a ton, one of the best features is the search function - you can find just about anything you can think up a question for. So have fun.

While looking for an exhaust system, I found the Borla cat back for a '91-92 ex. I was wondering if Borla was a good company to buy from. The price I found there was roughly $451. I was wondering if flowmaster exhaust systems are cheaper, or if the prices run about the same. I went to the flowmaster website, found some models, but now prices. I'm looking at getting the entire exhaust system, just for the fact that I split my tailpipe last weekend wheeling. I'm also on a cheap budget, so if there is a cheaper exhaust system out there that is just as good, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks.

borla is great - if you into buying names!
as for true performance measures (not that those mean anything - see my update on "can i do better for the money"), the flowmaster has a meater(louder) sound all around(idle/load), but for an everyday business vehicle i like my Dynomax (very inexpensive, sounds real sporty when under a load) and if CFM ratings mean anything they are the most freeflowing

Borla is good stuff from what I have read and heard, but I don't have the system and haven't ever owned a Borla system. The thing about it though, is that it is Stainless Steel (it won't rust out). The warranty on it is like a million miles I think. That is why it is so expensive, you only have to buy one for the life of the vehicle. (Assuming that you don't tear it off while wheelin'). The Flowmaster is aluminized steel (same stuff that normal mufflers are made of) the difference is the exhaust flow and routing in the muffler itself I guess. I know they sound real nice.

Other than that I only know what I have read (except for the Flowmaster sound a cousin had one). Hope this helps.

k&n air filter...modify the airbox (search on here to find out exactly what I mean by modify - basically cut holes in it to allow more airflow)...JETchip or Superchip...larger mass air flow sensor coupled with new headers and exhuast.

i'd so those will give you some needed hp, but it's gonna cost...

k&n...$45
modify...do it yourself
chips...$300
mas...$265
borla headers & exhuast...$650

My suggestion:

KKM intake: $90
Custom catback exhaust: $200
Chip: $200-300
Throttle body: $200

Those are pretty much the beginner mods. I've found larger MAS and headers aren't necessarily productive on a lightly modified Explorer.

Awfully glad to see some true 91-94 fans posting! I ordered my 93 EB from the factory and plan on keeping it forever if possible. I primarily tow and if I am blessed with one area I know a little something about, it is towing with 91-94s (do a search under towing) That said, one of the best things I have done recently is to have the carbon cleaned out and injectors cleaned by a good Ford technician who knew what he was doing. It finally got rid of my "ping" and WOW, a lot more power! Can't wait for me and the wife to tow our little travel trailer to the coast again w/o the dreaded "ping "' and enjoy the little bit of extra power. Mike

As for a fairly cheap hp increase, I love my electric fans... I installed a elec thermostat and wired up the 18" fan to it.... With that done got rid of clutch fan and fan shroud... Fixing to make a new brace for the fan... Then for A/C I installed a 12" fan in front of the radiator and wired up a relay to the power wire on the a/c compressor... Now when the a/c comes on the 12" does to and if it startes to get hot the 17" will also kick on.... Good for a/c in traffic jams in the hot summer... It also dont sound like a jet taking off when i mash it...
