I am trying to install a pioneer AVIC-Z1 in my 07 ford explorer xlt. Is there a site that shows how I can remove the radio step by step without me breaking anything.

I havent see how to do it on the new ones yet. Hopefully somone sees this post. If you have a haynes manual, that might help.

On my 2002 you plate around the radio, air controls and vents just pops off. You have to pry it on both sides at the top and then work your way around. It will be a little difficult because you will think you are going to break it, I just worked at it for a little while and finally it popped out.

Same on my 2005 Explorer. BTW I used some plastic tools for changing a bicycle tire. Whole lot cheaper than the specialized tools.

From a secret guide that a friend gave me.... this is for the 06-07 Explorer... :-)

1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent an accidental short circuit.

2 Open center console and remove (2) Phillips screws then unclip and remove entire panel surrounding shifter.

3 Remove dash panel surrounding radio to access the factory radio screws.

4 Remove (4) 9/32” screws to remove the factory radio.

The mounting kit number from Metra is 99-5807.

I love this guy already.

Don't mean to hi-jack this thread. It appears the first question has been answered... I was just wondering if any of you who know how to get to the radio happen to know how to remove the driver side kickpanel? It's the plastic panel to the left of the e-brake, I am trying to bring my strobe wires in from the outside through the hole in the door jam and need to get behind that kickpanel. Thanks in advance.

the kickpanel should have some screws that will loosen it up, you should be able to pull it out anough to secure all of your wires behind it. It worked well when I ran my power wires for my amp through there.

Well the problem is that there is a metal plate that the e-brake is attached to, and it is between the body frame metal and the plastic kick-panel so there is no reaching behind the panel because then there is just that metal thing for the e-brake. So I am hopeing if I get the kickpanel off there will be a hole in that metal piece somewhere to allow me to see the wires coming through so I can grab them. If I can't get through that hole in the door jam, I will have to drill a hole in the firewall which I was trying to stay away from as I am afraid of drilling a line or something else.

I guess I am confused why do you want to run them through the hole in the door jam? Where are they starting and ending? All wires going through a third gen ex can actually run along the length of the truck under the door jam floor thresholds which pop off. The wires can then tuck under the kickplate to the firewall. Instead of drilling a hole in the firewall, there should be a rubber boot area in which the steering wheel shaft passes. There is plenty of room to drill a small hole in the rubber. drill it just smaller then the wire and the rubber will flex and actually seal around the wire, making it waterproof as well as not chafing the wire. I have a pic I can send you on a PM so we do not hijack this thread any longer
