cheapest option is to replace it with the same speaker, hit up a junk yard and look for an x that hasnt been getting wet inside. if the speaker has been getting wet its probably no good.

you can get a decent pair of speakers for like $50 these days. if you decide to buy some aftermarket speakers look for some that have a high sensitivity. dont worry too much about the speakers power handling. anything you buy will be able to handle the power from a head unit.

The stock size speakers on the 3rd Gens are 6x8"

Here's a page with basic instructions and PDFs with pictures and more instructions for you to remove the panels and access the stock speakers.

I did a full speaker swap the last few weeks. Alpine components in the rears and Sony Xplods in the fronts. OEM are 5x7's on ALL of the holes in the '02 XLT.
If your running off the stock head, get something with a lower wattage to gel with it for sound and volume. The stocks are 25w. I originally ran the Xplods on the head and the rear Alpines on an amp. Couldn't hear the fronts at all, so i amp'd all of them. Something in the 35-45w RMS range will work well. The Xplods are a 35w RMS with a 195w Max in case you ever want to take it up with amps. Running on the amp, they have a lot of movement to give up some good Mid/Bass. I run a 12 Kicker to relieve them of much of that duty. Wallys had a few inexpensive versions of 5x7 that would work fine for a stock repl.
Panel Removal *SUPER EASY!!
Remove the screws on the bottom of the panel
Use a flat screwdriver to get under the bottom-front of the panel that is around the inside door opening handle. (as in wedge it in by the speaker grill) This is where it clips into the door panel. Get a little leverage and pop out the front of the panel. Pull the door latch handle and the back of the panel will come forward and off from around the handle >>>>******make sure you remove this panel first, before you try and remove the window/lock buttons control panel or you will snap off the plastic catch that catches the the door release handle panel.*****
After removing the opening handle panel, pull up on the front of the control panel and it will come up and pull forward to release from the back. Remove the wiring harness plugs from control panel.
There is one more screw holding the panel handle to the door located in a white plastic bracket that can now be seen behind the control panel. Remove it.
Grab the door closer handle and pull up on the whole panel about 2 inches and forward to come off. It will release all the plastic L brackets that fit into holes in the door.
Make sure when replacing the panel to line up all of these plastic L brackets to the holes. I used a little force thinking that it just wasn't going back in and wasn't quite lined up. The plastic parts break pretty easily. :(

a good option is to buy a chiltons manual for your X. you can get them at pretty much any auto store. the book has lots of how-to's for basic stuff such as changing a speaker, most stuff with pictures.
