Long story short. I put in the wrong rear Axel seals. Figured out I did that too late and the Ford dealership is closed up the road. Can I use a general limited slip friction compound from orileys? Or can I just fill it up. Drive on it for the night and tomorrow go and get it and add it in after?

just drain it into a clan drain pan and reuse if it's new oil.

I already dumped into my oil catch pan. I thought about that afterwards but its too late.

Any will work..the newer synthetics say that dont require it..

The additives helps the clutches ""slip"" a little to prevent chatter or chirping around turns..if its old used clutches and using new synthetic its probably not that important. .it can always be added later if you get chatter..

When i rebuilt my rangers rear with new carbon fiber clutches i just used synthetic and no additives. .it grabs HARD but wouldnt say it chatters, probably grabs harder because of the clutches.

I highly suggest the carbon fiber clutches if you have alot of miles on the stock ones and do alot of off roading..makes a huge difference.

Also little trick for filling is to fill in the top where the abs plug is,pull that out, clean it and fill from there

Thanks for the tip on using the ABS plug, It made it pretty easy to add the 4oz of the XL friction modifier and also use the rest of the 75w140 without having it come out the fill plug.

Just for a little comedic relief, I actaully ordered the right seals for the rear, But they were on a shelf in my room with parts to do the front suspension. So I installed the front seals in the rear, and filled it up when I had the right parts in my room the whole time... Yeah, lesson learned. wasted $60 and 3 hours. I will only do that once. In a good note though. The front seals I installed on the rear looked fine when I took them out so I will be able to reuse them. I now have an extra set of rear seals now lol. Oh well.

I juts picked a bottle up from the dealer today it was like 9$.I don't know if it makes a difference or not.I just run it because you are supposed to.I am not willing to find out what happens if you dont.LOL

Crazy how we both buy the same product from the dealership today and you paid $9 and I paid $7.

Oh man you wouldn't believe the difference from ford dealer to ford dealer. On some things it can be a 200$ difference. It has to do with the state and town you are in.My town is a tourist destination on the lake so i have to pay more for everything. Now if i was up north more in a small town then i would pay much less.

Well consider you both got a good deal,i just paid $12 for a bottle for my aviator. .im putting carbon fiber clutches and 4.10s in it but gonna add a bottle to this vehicle so it dont grab as hard

Is it a pretty big job to rebuild the rear diff? I have too thought about rebuilding mine to put in 4.10s as well.

To change ratio yes,its not really a driveway job and takes some special tools..to just replace the clutches is a easy hour job

Without you having to go into to much detail and explain the process. What special tools are needed? Press? Slide Hammer?

Yes..a press, dial indicator and depending on how you do your bearings a special tool is needed to remove/install the bearings without messing them up multiple times.its not rocket science but typically your driveway tech doesnt have them

Depending on year it might be easier to find a rearend already setup with 4.10s,they came stock in some..also depending on what gears and tires you have now might make regearing not worth it or worth it to go higher than 4.10

I second this, an already setup axle might be way easier to swap than fully rebuilding one to another ratio.

I second this. Swap in a decent used way easier.

I don't know how to look for my posts here (help anyone?), but I asked if my rear differential needed the friction enhancer and a forum member said my transmission number does not use it.

Transmission number?? Your trans has nothing to do with your rearend..Sure you dont mean your rearend number?? Open rearends dont use a friction modifier. .whats your rearend code on your door
