How long can your car last if you replace the starter but not the fly wheel?

My vehicle is a 98 Nissan Altima, Manual Transmission. About 2.5 years ago, I had my clutch and fly wheel REPLACED. Just recently, I had my starter replaced because my car was making a very loud crunch, grinding noise that would get longer each time I started the car. I understand that Fly Wheel problems are not that common, so I'm curious as to what is it I could be doing to my car that is making the fly wheel go bad?

Turns out I needed a new starter which was replaced. The mechanic also recommended that I need to get my fly wheel replaced as well. Don't have the money for that and just left the car shop with a new starter. It starts a lot better now, but you can still tell it's struggling. The mechanic guesses my car could make it about 6 mos-1 year in this condition. Any other thoughts from car mechanics or certified car technicians? Thanks.
