Well i just broke 30k miles on my 04 mountaineer v8 AWD.

Just curious at what mileage everyone does their brakes?

so...

1.) how many miles before doing brakes?

2.) what brand brakes or rotors did you go with and are you happy.

3.) how much did you spend total(just parts, but feel free to mention how much labor costed you)

4.) do the stock brakes/rotors have a good reputation, should i JUST replace the brake pads, or should i get NEW rotors too.....or maybe get the rotors turned.

5.) are Slotted rotors any good for SUV's?

Thanks guys!

BTW: If I do brakes, i'm going to be doing it myself, since i have a garage.... any tips?

Im on a $400 budget or so......but that could always change.

Idk how many miles my brakes had on them when I purchased the truck, but I had to replace my fronts after ~12K. I just did pads and used the cheap **** duralast pads from autozone; they get the job done but I don't think I'd use them again. Total job for the fronts cost me ~$33 to do it myself. The rotors are really easy to do; alot easier then me and my dad originally anticipated.

Powerslots are really good for the Ex's; i'll be installing them on all 4 corners the next time they're due for brakes, along with some HAWK LTS pads.

When you are driving and push the brakes to come to a stop, does the steering kinda shake? If so, your rotors are warped and you would need to replace them and get new pads. If it doesn't shake, then just get some new pads and you should be good. I went with cheapies and wish I would have gotten better pads cause it doesn't have a strong bite. If I ever get bigger rims, I am getting some powerslots. If you do decide that you want new rotors, you will need to break a ring off that holds the rotor in place thats on the lug. Very easy to do and you do not have to replace it. If you run into any problems, give us a holler and we'll help you.

-If you drive like a grandma and and don't tow anything, get some stockers and save money.

-If you drive like you stole it, then get some powerslots and good pads.

Thanks for the heads up!

After looking at some prices, i may only be replacing the Pads for now.
(i dont have any rotor problems anyways)

Ive been looking at the Hawk LTS, Brembo and DiscItalia.

Anybody have experience with those Titanium Kevlars that DiscItalia makes?

I read somewhere that some vehicles can ONLY use a specific type of brake pad material or something....just wondering if our X's and Mercs needed a specific brake pad material, etc.

My stock brakes arent that bad, but they do feel weak occasionally.
(i just HAVE that gut feeling they may wear down very soon!)

But I would still like to buy a Good brand of pads while I still have the money....just incase my pads decide to crap out a me a few months from now when im low on money.

i was thinking about doing my brakes also. i would say get the best pads you can. they should be no more than 100 dollars.

I just put Hawk LTS on mine. They seem to be the same feel as OEM I have not drove it enough to say anything about dusting. I do like them more than top shelf NAPA that I have one my Expedition.

PBR are the pads I like to use and Brembo Rotors.

At least get your rotors turned. It costs like $10 a rotor. You are in there already. Won't do anything but help.
