how much chain play on a BW4404?

just pulled my 4404 because of a popping noise (replaced the front driveshaft twice, didn't fix) and it seems the chain is very stretched out, like maybe an inch or more of play. i can turn the shafts by hand and watch it jump teeth. the teeth look great, which is good. was just wondering what is normal play on a new chain, and what is not acceptable. thanks in advance

I'm surprised that you have not found broken parts inside the transfer case if the chain can jump teeth, but it definitely should not be able to jump teeth with everything aligned.
