I recently had my clutch done by a local shop while i was on vacation. Coincidentally the 4x4 didn't work after they got done with it. I knew i should have done the clutch myself. I brought it back to them because i figured that they had forgotten to hook up the electrical connection. They said i needed a new selector motor and it would cost $300 for the motor alone. I think they are BSing me and that they deliberatly misaligned the motor. Tomorrow i am going to pull it apart, clean and align it. Just in case i do need a new one, how much am i really looking at?

Thanks
Dave

i'm not sure how much a motor is but if you do have to go that route try kensington auto parts 1-800-522-2897
thay are one of fords green companies and have many affiliates around the US, they've been helpful for me. now in so far as your motor goes sounds like you might be on the right track by cleaning and realigning it, because i had the exact same problem and that worked for me, by the way i work at a ford dealership and had numerous techs scope out the problem and was told by all but one that it needed replacement, last year i hired a new tech special to my dept and told him of my problem and he said, "thats BS", those things almost never go completely dead and within 1/2hr had it up and running with a simple cleaning(by this i mean he pulled the motor casing off and cleaned the connection plate, been a year now no problem.

I think the motor is from $180-$220 at Ford. I looked around for a friend that has a '98 Mazda B4000 and those were the prices I remember.

I had mine replaced 2 years ago and the motor cost around $360.

before anything, grab a rubber mallet, lay under the truck and wack that sucker while someone else tries to engage it, it may just be stuck. If that fails at least you took out some frustration,

OH yeah, where is Cedarburg WI?

That should have been parts and labor. Since it looks like Dave85zxt will be replacing it himself, he doesn't have to charge himself labor.

I bought mine at a wrecking yard for $50. I don't think it was ever engaged.

i got 8 of the things, 6 are BRAND new (I live near the proving grounds, hint, hint)

there is a wrecking yard down here in havelock nc who sells them for $50, when they have them that is .:D

Transfer Case Costs

Dave-

I live near Seattle, and because I'm having problems with my '94 XLT, I have looked everywhere for this part. The dealer quoted me $293, NAPA had it for $213, and I just checked with a Parts Plus Store today and they said $199. I checked at one junkyard a couple of weeks ago and they quoted me $100, but they didn't have any at the time. So I guess I need to save up all my penny's and go buy one. I sure hope it'll fix my problem. Good luck.
