How much play in steering is "normal"?

When I jack up my X and try to move the wheels side to sode they have movement. How much movement is considered normal? I can move them about 1/2" in either direction.

Check for play in the tie rod ends. It is the part that connects the tie rod to the spindle. Check this for play, there should be no play in it.
