i'm thinking i'm going to need my ball bearings or joints replaced here pretty soon.. theres a noise i keep hearing from my front end that doesnt sound right.. only when the wheels are turning.. it doesnt sound smooth.. nothing really shakes or anything.. it just sounds like somethin that helps makes the tires turn is either warn or out of line..

how much would replacing them run about?

thanks but how will that show me how much labor would cost as well, i'm jsut curious if anyone has had them replaced and remembered about how much it cost

If you take it somewhere, make sure to go to a suspension shop - they'll have the right tools to get the job done in less time (i.e. press). Some shops still press BJs in with hand tools, taking much more time.

From my experience...

If you have it done, make sure to get ones with grease fittings (MOOG are lifetime warrantied) - which will allow you to make sure they never go dry. You should be able to get the lowers done for about $170 (each side - based on $40 for the part and 2 hours labor @ $65/hr). Uppers are pricier to buy - i believe the left upper is about $100 and the right upper is $80 or so. The uppers are complete control arms - generally you cannot replace just the BJ on uppers. The labor is a little less on uppers, figure 1.5 hours. Make sure to have them install an aftermarket camber kit, which will allow the next issue to be addressed correctly ----> the alignment. The camber kit should run you and add'l $25/side (?) but will require no add'l labor, as it is primarily replacement bolts for your upper control arms that they had to put back on anyway. Factor in the need for an alignment afterwards ($50-$80), b/c your camber will likely be out of spec and you could ruin your tires. A suspension shop should have an alignment machine there anyway, so you can have it all done at one place.

I had all of my BJs done over the past 1.5 years. I'll try to find my receipts and let you know the labor time at the specialty shop i went to.

I just replaced the ball joints on my Durango last weekend-- it took a total of about 8 hours- I have air tools and a decent garage, but I'm not a professional by any means. OEM procedure would have been to replace the whole upper control arm, but the Moogs for the Durango were bolt-on after drilling and chiseling the rivets on the old upper ball joint. I'm not sure if the ex would be the same.

Brock,
Be on the lookout, Dodge is going to recall Durango's and Dakota's for ball joints.

Unfortunately they only recalled 2000-2002 and I have a 1999. The recall prompted me to check and, sure enough, after only 50K miles, my upper ball joints were shot. I couldn't believe how much the passenger side was moving around! My wife drives this, so I didn't know it had been clunking for a while.

I bought four Moogs (as everyone here recommends) from Rockauto.com and replaced them all. I'm actually happy I did it myself, because I have Moogs now instead of the the cheapest parts that Chrysler can find for the recall campaign. (I also got to buy a couple new tools. :D )
