Rather than write the whole procedure up, I would suggest you get a manual (Chiltons and Haynes are adequate for this job). www.autozone.com has the equivalent of Chiltons under vehicle repair guides on their website. I assume you have the auto hubs, so follow the instructions for auto hubs. Be sure not to miss the little key that holds the wheel bearing locknut in place. As I recall, the hardest part of this job when I did it the first time was finding someone who had the appropriate wheel bearing locknut socket (2-3/8 in).

thanks for the adivce, but even after lookin at it, i dont see how i get the rotor off. the little cam thing or whatever they call it. how the hell does that come off?

The splined washer, cam, and thrust washers just pull off. They are held in place by a "C" clip around the axle shaft. Do you have the 2 3/8" axle nut socket to remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut (it can be hard to find). You will also need a torque wrench for re-seating this nut to correctly seat the wheel bearings otherwise you will ruin them if not correctly torqued down. To reinstall the plastic cam you will need to make a plastic cam installation tool out of a 1 1/2" pvc plastic pipe you cannot install the cam without this.

If getting new rotors I would recommend getting new wheel bearings (without the seats as the new rotors will have them already pressed in. You will also need new grease seals (1) per rotor, as well as grease to pack them.

Please read the info in my Explorer Maintenance sig line. It covers this subject in detail. Although the procedure is straight forward, brakes and wheels are not components to skimp on. They require special tools and accurate work too ensure they will perform correctly.

thanks i read it...its to daunting for me though. i think ill just have to skip the trip and get the car to a repair shop. i can change brakes, but all that other junk, i will probably screw something up.

From right to left : Splined washer, Cam, Thrust washers. Note the "C" clip has been removed prior to this picture.

After pulling the above off you can extrat the locking key from the Wheel bearing adjusting nut.
