It seems like my carrier bearing has gone out in my rear diff. The rear diff makes a growling noise over 20 mph and the sound is louder turning left than right. Looking online, I think that one of the carrier bearings failed. How hard is it to replace the carrier bearings? Will I have to drop the whole differential and press all the bearings out, then re-set the gears?

Do you know which rearend you have? There is a code on your door tag. If it is the limited slip rearend it could be your clutchpacks. I'm currently dealing with the same thing. Change your rear diff fluid and it might quiet it for awhile and buy you some time. Mines been this way since the spring and I'm waiting til next year to fix it. If I'm easy on the gas while turning it's not so bad. Good luck.

Not sure which rear end I have, I'll have to check tomorrow when it isn't raining. My explorer is a 2002 Eddie Bauer V8, so I assume it's the 3.73 or 3.55 limited slip. I'll have to crawl under there and check the tags on it tomorrow. The diff was whining for 4-5 weeks and I just ignored it since 8.8s tend to whine. Then it started to growl last week, so I dropped the drain plug and drained the fluid out. The magnetic fill plug was covered in metal. I cleaned the fill plug off and re-filled the diff with friction modifier from Napa and the walmart brand full synthetic 75W 140 diff oil. I was hoping this would make the noise go away, but it made no difference. The noise only occurs over 20 mph and it makes a growling noise. It makes the noise going straight, which is why I don't think it is the clutch packs. The internet says that those symptoms point to a failed carrier bearing. I know where the pinion bearing is, but what is the carrier bearing? Are those the bearings that go in the housing where the two half shafts come in? Any guidance on whether to try to pull the diff and replace the bearings myself or buy a used diff would be greatly appreciated.

you just cant only replace the bearings.. just letting you know

If you are going to go through all the hassle of replacing the carrier bearings you may as well rebuild the whole thing. Or install an already rebuilt one. To replace the carrier bearings you need to remove the differentail and take teh carrier and ring gear assembly out of the housing. The bearings are pressed onto either side of the carrier. At this point you are going to remove the pinion and replace those bearings too, because you are in there. The pinion bearing preload needs to be set accurately. The the carrier bearings need to be shimmed for proper preload. Then you can check the pinion depth and gear mesh. this may require more shimming. There is also the issue of replacing the clutch packs while the carrier is out. As you can see it is not just replacing bearings.

Have you had your rear wheel bearings replaced? These can make similar noises and are cheaper to replace that the differential.

Dear @all,

are there companies offering complete rebuild 8.8 units?
