Hi all

I just got my 1993 Explorer XLT 4x4, auto hubs, auto tranny, 4 door, with 99780 miles. It is a little more plush then I need but my wife likes it.

It has running boards, I have never had a rig with them. I would think they would get in the way on the rough roads. What do the rest of you think??

It also has a bit of a slow idle, makes it feel like it runs a bit rough. Give it a little gas and it smoothes right out. What is the Poper idle speed, and can I adjust it?

This is a great site!!

Thanks for your help

Rob

congrads on rob and welcome to the forum as well

Welcome To Explorer Forum! I put running boards on mine and they are about the same height as the frame, so no, you will be okay as long as you are not rock crawling. Also, you can adjust the idle. Just search it and I am sure theere are at least one thread that will tell you how to do it.

Most people on here remove the running board's including me. Ive been in a few situations where if I had the running boars on they wouldnt look pretty. I would ditch them!

If you're having a rough idle, just try giving it a proper tuneup. That way if it's still idling rough you may have another problem, but you'll also know what was done win. I'd start with spark plugs and spark plug wires. I had a horribly rough idle that was actually sputtering and skipping at times, and with new plugs it evened right out.

Make sure the fuel pump isn't starting to give out, turn the key to the on positino (but don't turn the engine on), and see how strong the "whirrrr" sound is. But I've seen where a fuel filter can cause rough idle as well.

Good Luck, and welcome

Thanks for the great tips!

I am still trying to find out what the proper idle speed is. Accoding to the tach, it is running about 600 to 650 ,maybe 700. When I give it a little gas and the RPM's come up to about 1000-1200 it runs very smooth.

I am planning on putting in new plugs and wires as soon as I can.

What is the best way to clean the throttle body, air intake, mass air flow sensor, and the idle air control solenoid valve.

Is there anything you would suggest as an additive to run in the gas tank that would help clean it out??

Thanks

Rob
