Out putting 4 guage wire into my X and I finished, but I realized I forgot to put the fuse in the fuse holder. Like an idiot, I unscrew the end that has the wire that attatches to the battery. Well, I'm putting the fuse into the unattached end and I drop it. The gold terminal that the fuse hooks into hits one of the pulleys in the motor. Immediate smoking, followed by melting flex tubing, and a huge fire that melted the sleeve of my brand new fleece jacket (why I was wearing it, I don't know) I'm freaking out running like hell because I think my battery is going to blow up. I'm screaming, Oh #%* I'm a Dip#@! because everytime something goes wrong with my X my dad gets pissed. I can only imagine if it was my fault something went wrong how pissed he would be. Then I realize, Oh SHeeeitttt! My car might be on fire. I run back to find melted plastic stuck to the battery, where it describes the belt assembly of the engine, and to the fan belt itself. And the fire still going a little bit. I try and find what's left of the wire and where the terminal post might have fused onto. It fused Right onto the pulley, but it's not that bad, only a little tiny nick in it. It pulled off pretty easily. Now I'm scared crapless to start my car, so I tricked my friend into doing it because he didn't know what was going on. With the hood still up, I had him get in the car, I yelled okay, wait 5 seconds and then start the engine. I ran like hell, but it started fine, so I had to run back before he saw me. Well, everything's fine now. I learned my lesson, and now it's off to learn more important lessons. I hope this made ya laugh, because now that I think about it, it's pretty funny how freaked out I was.

i was laughing because of how you tricked your friend into starting the car, and ran away. what would you do if it did blow up? i'm sure your friend would be pissed. or would you pretend like you had no idea and say " what the hell did you do to my car!"

next time disconnect the battery until you are done with everything. glad to hear everything is ok (except for your fleece):)

LOL! Yeah what lee said. "Hey you @ss hole, what'd you do to my explorer?" "Nothing I just started it." "Well cars don't just blow up you know."LOL! Oh that's funny stuff man.:D

Good Story!

I've got nothing compared to that (thank God)... But while we're on to stupid **** done while wiring a stereo... I was installing a noise filter and for the first time ever I didn't bother to disconnect the ground wire on my battery. (I'm sick and tired of reseting the memory on my hu). BIG MISTAKE! While I was wiring everything I thought I heard a pop. But didn't know what it was and pretty much ignored it, and finished hooking everything up turn the car on and the flip panel on my hu doesn't flip. So I figure ok bad connection, I check connections everythings fine. Now I'm freaking out. So I get out my tester and test to see if there's any power going to the unit. The wire's dead! :( Not just the memory wire, but also the ignition switch wire. So now I have my hu wired memory wire wired to my cigarette lighter. And the ignition switch wire wired to the switch that I have my intereor neons hooked up to (Also my cigarette lighter. (Hey it may not be the best way to do it but if I wouldn't have done it that way I'd probabbly have screwed up my $60 neons in the proccess. So everything is working for now. Sooner or later though I'm going to have to get in there and re run the wires that are burnt out. WHAT FUN THAT'S GOING TO BE!
Thank goodness though I was born with the ability to troubleshoot damn near anything electrical. Or else I'd be paying a damn good bit to have the electrical system in my explorer replaced. What I'm looking forward to the least (aside from having to take the entire dash off of my vehicle. Is working with Ford's wonderful idea to save money on the vehicles wiring system by using TAPE to snake the wires together rather than ties or actual snake. I can't stand messing with wires that have sticky residue all over them. I'm just glad that it didn't mess up my $450 head unit.

But very entertaining story. I bet that's one to tell the grandkids...

Thanks Deeper, that is one to tell the grandkids. We all do stupid things, and we all should learn from it.

Another story... In high school a friend of mine had a very nice Pontiac GTO convertible. One weekend he installed a a stereo. The last thing he did was run the power wire through the firewall to the stereo. Then he went inside. Half an hour later his mom came home and said his car was on fire. He ran outsdie to find it totally engulfed in flames. A total loss. Lesson? Use grommets when running wires through sheetmetal!
