This could be kinda lengthy.........
Well, my tranny just got rebuilt for the 4th time.....So I had my Explorer back for a few hours and already had problems.... Its the same problem that seems to surface every time, yet the guy at the tranny shop can't figure out why....or just doesn't care.... Anyways, the problem used to only happen when the X was hot...back in the days of rebuilds 1-3, IT WON'T DOWNSHIFT INTO FIRST, when I come to a stop. Then just before this last rebuild, it magically fixed itself...didn't care how...didn't care why, alls I cared about was that it finally worked right. Now today, the X had been sitting for a couple hours, and I put the thing in Drive, and it doesn't shift completely into first....I thought maybe it was just a fluke...NOPE! I stopped at a stop sign....no downshift to first. Stopped again, went from neutral to Drive....no complete shift into first. I was told once by the guy to replace the TPS, I did that, no luck. Im at the end of my rope here fellas......I love my Explorer to death, but Im about ready to torch it........Any ideas on what I can do?

When you say "went from neutral to drive" - is that when you left the stop sign? The trans if its in D will be in first at the stop sign - so from your description it sounds like you didnt get the shift into 2nd it went 1 to 3. Downshifts would be from 2 to1, so I think you are missing 2nd gear? Can you clarify this?

If you have no 1-2 or no 2-1 it have something to do with the intermediate band. The intermediate band is out of adjustment, or bad, or the intermediate servo bore or seals are damaged.
The valve body should be checked , valve body problems - stuck valves, dirty, torn gasket, bolts not tightened correctly etc. Manual valve or linkage should be checked also.
Also check the Vacuum modulator, vaccuum lines.

Have you been taking it to the same shop each time? If so another set of eyeballs on it may be a good idea.

Is it an A4LD? lol... I dunno what's wrong... I just know if it's an A4LD they kinda suck...
