I just bought a 94 4x4, and hope that it's not a mistake!

Finally got around to dropping the pan. There was some gunk on the magnet, but no appreciable metal on it. There were some particles that resembled glitter in the fluid in the bottom of the pan. Cause for worry? At this point does anyone have a idea about which way I should go next? I've fixed almost every thing else on it thanks to the people on the forum...driver's side window, passenger window, electric seats and bunches of little things. Thanks to everyone who posts!
I'm going to pick up another X probably next week, and would like to have this one running by then. I just have to plead ignorance on transmissions.

Back again! Well, finally had it hauled to AAMCO, and most the internals are fried. According to the guy at AAmco, I need to rebuild it, but he says the internals are not worth using in a rebuild. I am having trouble finding a good used tranny to scavenge parts to rebuild it. I did find a 1990 X, 4.0 with a 4x4 that is running. Will this swap work? Anybody know?
Thanks

bumping an older post I know but it may help me and others by doing so.

BrooklynBay I have a question for you or Glacier991. In this tread your diagram says to back off the OD band two turns after you tighten it (120 inch pounds) but on the other band it says to only back it off 1.5 turns.

Now all the reading I did before I attempted this job mostly said back off both two turns so that is what I did was I right in that? It dose not slip I know that after I had to readjust it because the first time it did slip a bit.

Also one other question could the bands slipping make an a4ld heat up in stop and go or heavy loading but not at hwy speeds. It also gave no clue it was slipping I only think it may have been from the gray build up in the bottom of the pan as it was extensive. It also had some glitter look to the oil in the pan bottom but no wear other and a few small very small bits trapped in the tranny filter. This is on a rebuilt that has about 30 to 40,000 miles on it now and 5 years. Any way thinks for sharing your vast knowledge with us all

The correct amount of turns would be 2 turns. The older C3 specs sometimes get mixed up with A4LD specs. The double wrap band is 3.5 turns which causes even more confusion since people don't always know the history of the transmission (if it had updated parts during a rebuild).

Thanks BrooklynBay as what you said about two is what I did and I must say it is a lot better now that I have taken up the slack from the wear on it. Fact is now shifts just like it did when I had it rebuilt. I do know reading a lot here can also confuse us simple minder guys who are to used to working on the old cars that we so simple LOL but this old dog is learning some new tricks that’s for sure.

Some things didn't change since the old cars. The older C3 had an adjustable band just like the A4LD. Electrical systems have changed a little (6 volt systems were upgraded to 12 volts & generators were upgraded to alternators). The basic concepts are the same (until you start dealing with hybrids).
