I'm looking at a 92 Eddie Bauer 4x4 2 dr. There's a rumble that seems to come from the front when accelerating, the engine purrs clean tho. I'm concerned that it may be front axle issue. Also the AC doesnt work but body and seats in great shape. What do you think??? Help me make the decision. I'll look through other thread sfor the same stuff.

The rumble in the front could be a bad U-Joint (About $14) or the wheel barings might need to be packed. As for the AC you can get a recharge/conversion kid from the auto parts store for about $30 it has something in it that will seal up any minor leaks and if you have a big one like i did (Cracked pipe) some JB Weld will fix it.

The conversion kits can easily destroy an a/c system if not done properly (and they rarely are).

I'd guess wheel bearings too - pull both front wheels off and see if the outer locknuts have backed off. Very common on the D35.

how so? you put the adaptor on and do the math of how much of the new stuff you are going to put in.

Thanks Explorer brains. I'm pretty handy with cars and will check on the bearings. As for the AC, the compressor clutch did not engage when I pushed the ac switch on. Makes me believe that the AC compressor is bad. Current temp is 45 degrees F outside.

Yes the old R12 AC's on these cars had a problem with leaking that eventully lead to the death of the AC compresser

you can replace the compresser and clutch with a new assembly (about 400 bucks) but ive always been told you will be replacing it again if you didnt replace everything (all the way down to the controls behind the dash)

i havent gotten around to fixing mine, since i can live with out it, but when i do fix it i aint using that r134a ... R12 is soo much better.

opps double

Your AC problem might be just due to loosing all refridgerant. A shop should be about to replace the O-Rings fix the leaks and recharge it for about $250-300 if that's the only problem.

You MUST get all the old R12 out in the process of doing the conversion. You need to have the system evacuated by a shop, and then you need to replace the orifice tube, etc... If you don't, you run the risk of getting a sludge buildup in the system (the oil used with R134 is not compatible with what was used with R12) that can clog it up irreparably.

OK Gang -- Special thanks to AG -- the u-joint at the rear was bad. When I looked under the car and twisted the drive shaft it was quite evident. $16 later, there's no more rumble!!! Yeah babeeeee!!!!! I'm cruzin smooth now!!
