1997 Mountaineer V8 AWD
I'm fairly new to the mounty scene and have spent a couple hours reading the forums but can't find exactly what i'm looking for.

I wan't more power. Simple. I have a 1997 Mounty, 5.0l AWD.

I guess my queastions are whats the best way to do that? Is the '97 xplorer the same as the '97 mounty and can I buy any part for one and have it fit the other?

Any info will be a huge help.

Mounty and Explorer are the exact same other than grill/headlights/bumper and some factory options.
What kind of power are you trying to get? What mods do you have?

As far as power goes I havent really done anything. I chopped the stock muffler off and am running open exhaust after the cats. Other than the muffler delete I'm completely stock. This is the only car I own with less than 400HP so I guess we can shoot for the number.

I donno much about the 5.0 but I'm pretty sure a supercharger will fit under the hood. You could also turbo, several guys have done both.
With 400 hp I'd be looking into beefing up the trans as well. The v8 has a good tranny but there's nothing wrong with making it stronger.
Transfer case may not like that much power either, the 4406 would be a good idea and that will get rid of AWD (power robber)

Torque Monster headers are real popular on here

I would start with torque monster headers as the factory manifolds are super restrictive, free flowing exhaust would not hurt either, i plan on doing both here pretty quick. Air intake is a topic that has people on both sides of the argument, many say its worth it and many say its not. i think it is so if i were you i would get headers, exhaust, air intake, then a better performance chip or get one custom made (read around on here for that) that will make sure your engine is taking advantage of all your mods, then after that i would run either a turbo or supercharger, which would most likely require bigger injectors and an intercooler and what not (not to familiar with either)
out of curiousity what is your mechanical level? budget? and what other cars do you have since there all over 400 hp?...

I have next to zero mechanical skill, all theory but my dad and 2 brothers are professional mechanics...free labor :) and budget is probably $5k before my wife notices.

The other cars I have are a 1977 Camaro built for the drag strip a 2000 Camaro SS with a few mods to make it louder and faster and a 2001 Corvette Z06 slightly modded. The Vette is for sale if anyones interested.

400 hp, and a 5K budget, you may want to decrease the hp, or increase the budget.
like the others have said, torque monsters are a good start. you will want to look into a turbo for it. superchargers are no longer made for these trucks, and finding a used one only happens once, maybe twice a year. drop the awd from it, and put a 4406 manual case it in. i cant say how big of a difference it is (i did mine when i did the 5L swap, so i cant give a before or after) but members who have done it say they get a little better mileage, and it feels more responsive. other then a turbo (which will have to be custom made and it still wont bring you to the hp you want, nor will a super charger alone), your only thing left to do is a 347 stroker

Word of advice, stick to stuff you feel comfortable doing by yourself. Even if the help is available, you never know what may happen that puts you in over your head.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I have a good starting point. I don't NEED 400hp, just a number for conversations sake...and it served its purpose well.
