i need help

I have a 1995 ford explorer 4x4 sporttrac with a 4.0 v 6,currently iam getting really really bad gas mileage i have no misses the idle is perfect and the performance is up to par,iam guessing its the oxygen sensor,the parts store says there is only 1 does anyone know if there is more than 1 and where would the other be located besides the exshaust,and would this be the culprit to the very bad gas mileage,any ideas thanks alot.

Replacing any sensor without diagnosis or at least a code is a waste of money. Many folks seem to be noticing a big difference in MPG in the winter. Possibly something to do with the gasoline formulations. I know my wifes car, which has the computer fuel mileage display, has lost a full 1MPG since we moved from California to Colorado.

Thanks for the reply,like i was saying the parts store said i had only one but if there was 2 i would just replace them cause i have 130,000 miles but i was trying to figure out if there may be some other reason but my gas mileage is like 8 miles to the gallon i know something is wrong thanks again for the post.

Have you checked for codes? Checked for fuel leaks? Especially check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Pull off the vaccum hose, if there is any evidence of gasoline there you have a problem with the FPR.

The fuel regulator was changed when i first got this thing,it doesnt seem to be running rich by any means,iam stumped,my check engine light comes on but when you plug in the code reader there seems to be a promblem there cause it wont read any codes i have had a few people run a code check and i get the same results,some people say that 96 and up will register codes,this vehicle is in great condition and well taken care of so like i said iam stumped and without being able to verify any codes i was left with the idea that an oxygen sensor was out some people said that would affect my gas mileage drastically,i was wondering if that is a possibility or just a myth and if so where are the sensors located other than the exshaust,i guess i need a chilton lol any thoughts would be so appreciated.

I would agree with a couple points posted. It is best to have a diagnostic check done to pull out any codes etc. My thought would be also that it could be 02 sensors or clogged catalytic converter.However, you would have a performance issue as well. And third-yes 02 sensors should be changed as regular maintenance. I believe at 60K, but read your owners manual. So if you change them you would not hurt anything if they have not already been changed.

There are two o2 sensors on mine. One on the downpipe from the left manifold and one inbetween the two catalytic converters.
