exp: Hi guys, I rencently moved to Mexico, I broght my 99 Explorer from US I got it since new. The altitude where I live is very high (9,100 ft), when I drive at the high way mountains I get to points that they are 9,800-10,000ft XLS 4.0L SOHC in the city drives very well at 9100, but the engine and the Trans screems going up from 9100 to 10,000 ft, what can I do to increase acceleration ?

Adding a supercharger will be complicated and expensive, I have seen this blowers on e bay like one on the link below, has any of you have experience with a good electric blower can it run 100% of the time with no switch or may be a turbo charge is better and how complicated is it. or should I keep it the way it is? My Explorer is to stock right now no mods, no performance chips yet.

What can I do to increase acceleration ? it has 146K Miles. I love it

hey i have a cold air intake(65 off ebay) and magna flow 2 into 1 Y pipe (25 ebay) into a 22 inch cherry bomb (25 autozone) and i have about 15-25 more horses, prolly 35 more lbft, less weight, and better fuel economy. for less than $150

First get the basics out of the way. Intake, exhaust, tune. A good exhaust with a 2.5" tail pipe does great for these motors. A nice intake will make it breath nicely as well. One of my favorite mods, the electric fan, helps a lot by taking drag off the motor. With the mileage on it, do a nice tune up as well. Get the injectors professionally cleaned, new plugs and wires. Change out the fuel filter. Swap over to full synthetic oils. This provides less drag on the motor.

I personaly only have added a new air intake system (from K&N), but many people have said the best 2 mods to do first is an air intake system and an exhaust system. I want to get a better exhaust but I dont have the skill to make one myself and cant afford one built by a company.

At the end of the day, I think really there are only a few options:
1) force induce (a turbo or supercharger)
2) a numerically higher gear ratio (axle swap)
3) lighten the vehicle
4) v8 engine swap
5) smaller diameter tires

I'm not sure a larger exhaust diameter will help because that decreases exhaust velocity - which is the reason why the v6's prefer one single muffler (instead of two).

I can attest to this. I had dual flowmasters and switched to a single because low end was lost. Out of all the systems I've tested, I've found a single 2.5" pipe to the rear is best versus stock 2"

Which leads me to a side topic- the new 3.7L mustang has an X pipe and true duals from the factory. Makes you wonder

^Have you tried the 2.25" single pipe system? Is it quiter? More ooomphh?

As does my 4 liter...Including dual high flow cats and dual staggered rear cats as well...And 2.25" pipes front to back and dual in-dual out magnaflow muffler and 2 pipes out the back...

With the pipe size I use and the porting mods to the exhaust ports on the new heads and the manifolds I believe the velocity on the exhaust side is maintained and perhaps increased... I have not dynoed the engine yet as it is not broken in yet but I can tell you the engine will redline faster than with the stock system and the throttle response is excellent...

I agree going with the Basics first, Also I would like to consider the following options.
1.- K & N air inatake vs. Electric Fan Intake what would work best?
2.- Pipe change current stock 2" to 2.5" ( I will do it)
3.- Cherry Bomb Muffler + Magna Flow together.
4 - Should I remove tha catalitic converter?
5.- Tune up I am using Bosh Duble Platinum it seems to work better than Motorcraft.
6.- I have new S. Plugs wires on it
7.- I use Synthetic Oil already.
8.- Axle swap (for what vehicle axle) ?
9.- Lighten the vehicle, what can I take off? I can't think on anything that I am carrying for nothing.
10.- Smaller diameter tires ??????? currently it is to stock it will look like a toy if I change to something else don't you think.

Hi Bruce,
Do you have pictures or similar picture of the Magna flow and the Cherry Bomb you got on yours? I want to buy them, question your set up should fit my Explorer right? my vechicle is a 99 SHOC 4.0L (4dr 4X4) XLS..

yes . absolutely. the y-pipe i orderd off ebay had two, 2.25 inch inlets and a 2.5 inch outlet(u should be able to find it easily on ebay.)the stock pies are 2.25 inch in diameter. so since the exit was 2.5 i used a 2.5 inlet cherry bomb measuring 22inches(the maximum length u can have w/0 having to fabricate extra exhaust pipes.) which was welded into the system just before the pipe turns up into the resonater(our setup should be identical) now, the y pipe was installed where, after the cats, the two pipes begin to split away from each other. about half way thru the transition of the split the pipes were cut and the ypipe installed and welded in.then directly mated to thee glasspack, which in turn is directly weled to the remaining stock exhaust immediatly before the pipe turns up and into the resonater. if u want it a little louder u can use a shorter glass pack. they offer 8inch glass packs on cherry bomb .com but they are 40$ a piece. honestly, i wish i would have bought two cherrybombs and two downward pointing tips and made it into a dual exhaust, prolly woulda squeezed out a few extra ponies.u can do that for the same price. it would be loud tho.not sure how to get a pic on here but my email is bruceparkinson@live.com . hope i helped
