Look under the hood.

If the intake tube goes in at an angle and the engine cover says 4.0 SOHC then you have the SOHC.
If the intake tube goes in straight and the cover says 4.0 EFI then you have the OHV.

The SOHC makes about 50 more peak hp and revs higher. 97 was the first year for it and it did have many recalls and TSBs with engine issues. Hopefully those would be fixed on yours.

The OHV is a proven workhorse. It makes great power down low but many feel it lacks some power on the highway. Overall a very good motor.

EDIT: The SOHC stands for single overhead cam. The OHV stands for overhead valve, with the cam in the block like older engine designs. There is no DOHC V6 for the Explorer.

oh... i have the 4.0 EFI. so i have the OHV. which is like 160 hp?

yup

d'oh. thanx for the info though. any recommendations for more hp?
I am a Camaro guy myself. but was unable to see any cold air intakes, or the like for the explorer in summit or jegs. I dont' want to get too crazy like the pictures at the top. just somethin' to add a little hp.
thanx for the info though, ... maybe if you own an older camaro i would be able to answer a few of your questions.

I recommend a KKM intake and Magnaflow exhaust:

Dead Link Removed

Start with those. Later you can add a BBK throttle body and Apten chip.

I have a EFI along with slick50. what do those letters stand for?

EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection
OHV - Overhead Valve
SOHC - Single Overhead Cam

Mac Intake for the V6 OHV

We now carry the Mac Intake for the V6 OHV (96-01) at Explorer Express #3640 $144.95. The one in the photo has the Pro-M 75mm Mass Air Sensor mounted to it.

The chrome mass air sensor from Pro-M is sold seperately for $244.95.
