I bought my 91 explorer last year. It is a five speed. When i bought it the guy had just placed a rebuilt transmission in there and since then I have had nothing but problems with the transmission. The first problem was the guy put the wrong gears in there so it was rebuilt again 4 months later. Then i replaced the old clutch. Now my transmission is back out and the guy that does my transmission is saying it is driver error and that i should not run 31x10.50's. My question is does anyone else have any problems with their 5 speeds pushing bigger tires? Please respond quickly because I might have to sell the car and do not want to do that. I do not understand how i can burn up a transmission in 4 months. Please give me some ideas.

Sounds like you need to find a reputable transmission guy that you can trust. I've run 33's with a 5 speed for some time, and many others have done the same. Rick's rig is a 5 speed. The Mazda 5 speed is not the strongest transmission in the world, but mine has held up ok.

The only thing I can suggest is find a tranny shop that is reputable. I'd get 3 or more bids from different shops. Ask for references. This isn't rocket science. You should be able to find someone in your area that can help you. If not, let us know and we'll help you find someone who will.

I'd like to start of by welcoming you to the site. You'll find every answer all right here. If I'm guessing you're fighting a warranty item. You're right they're wrong. There have been several people here running 31's+++ on a stock tranny. To me it sounds like the shop is working on getting itself out of rebuilding another tranny and working on covering up their shotty work. Keep pressing them and stating that while the explorer tranny's are horrid, they should last over 4 months.....at least 6 :)))

Good luck.

Leebo and DOGMAN are right on the money on this one, there is a problem with the rebuilder not the tires. If this is under warranty, then don't let them off, make them fix it right.
I've been running 33x12.5x15 Mud tires on my rig for the past 6 months, before that I ran 31x10.5x15 BFG AT's for two years. I have stock 5 speed Mazda manual trans and still have the stock clutch, also I pull a tent trailer.
Never had a problem with the trans or the clutch.

I've been running 32X 11.5's on my '93 since I bought it 4 years ago. The guy I bought it from bought it new and put 32's on it. I've got over 102k on it with no problems. Put the screws to those guys!!!
