I have 2012 Ford Explorer and one day it just didn’t want to start. Turn key and not much of anything. Battery is ok and I pulled the starter and it seems ok

Yesterday I went to look at the ignition switch and I broke something upon taking it out.

There is a pcb that had a very thin red wire that seem to wrap around the ignition key switch. It made a loop and was soldered to two spots on the part. Anyone know what it’s function is?

That’s why I don’t try and fix stuff I break more. Still not sure what my original problem was however when I put a multimeter on the small cable from the ignition hooked to the starter I didn’t seem to get any voltage.

More concerned if I broke something else lol

When you initially tried to start the engine, did you hear anything at all? Clicking? Do you have remote start? Do you know what it was that you broke?

I might have heard 1 slight click. But it wouldn't turn over. This is when i removed the starter and tested it.
Then I checked the battery and fuses and relays under the hood.

I found what this is is or looks like.
Amazon product ASIN B000NS2OLMDoesn't sound good that i broke this, sounds like this might be related to the chip in the key.

Yes it does have a remote start, not sure where the dongle is since we have never used it.

If you heard a click, to me that would indicate that the ignition switch was okay. Did you try to see if you could put it into accessory mode?
Even though you said the battery was okay, I don't suppose you tried to get it boosted?
If there is supposed to be a picture in your post above, I don't see it. I've had that issue with some pics especially if copied from amazon. I'll try using my phone.

According to this site, it doesn't fit your 2012 Explorer.

Yeah. I found the proper one on the Ford site. I will come back when I get this part and back to where I started.

Battery is only a few months old but I did put it on charge mode and it still didn’t start. It seems like it’s not getting voltage to the starter. Had my daughter turn the key and I got 0 volts on the ignition cable to the starter . I was expecting 12v?

I do have 12 volts to the bigger cable on the starter

FYI, you will likely find it for less on the site I linked. The Ford site is the most expensive. Levittown is a forum vendor and members can get a discount from Benny. Good luck.

Ok got the part and it’s back in place time to start some troubleshooting. I can get to accessory mode and hear radio etc

If you can turn the ignition to accessory mode then I would think the switch itself is working. Also, if you hear a click when you try to start the engine, that to me would indicate that there is power being sent. I believe that the starter is the first item in line but not 100% positive. Are you still getting 0 volts to the starter? Are battery terminals clean and making good contact. Does your charger have a position to allow for engine starting?

I am pretty sure the battery is good. I have tried to put it in high mode to start and it doesn’t hanger anything.

Here is my recent testing

Continuous hot cable to starter is 12.9v
Ignition cable is 0 volts when Being turned on.

I do hear the relay clicking in the fuse box.

Ok, Did some further tests and I was able to jump the starter when connecting it to t he battery.
Something is stopping voltage to be sent to the starter.
