well i been working on car and trucks my whole life and and considered to be a pretty good tech..but i have done a rookie mistake..i bought a 94 xlt 4x4,,the first truck i have owned..the 4wd was not working so i joined this forum to get some insite on how to trouble shoot and repair this problem..this forum is great and after checking the switch and module l found out that the transfer case motor was bad,,i work at a local parts store and bought a dorman replacement for 68 bucks and it now works or worked fine,,let me explain..i just fix it this morning about a half hour ago and went for a test drive..according to the forum you put the car in drive and and then just the button either sitting still or driving ...well so far so good..well then i wanted to see about the 4low option and well thats when stupid took over..i wanted to see what the 4 low would feel like and kinda pushed the throttle a little hard while on pavement and a heard a kinda a loud clunk and now have no drive or reverse unless you give its lots of revs...so what i am asking is the trans broken or transfer case??,, this is a 4ald trans not a 5sp if you havent figured it out..i know its going to cost and i am just wondering approx how much and is it best to rebuild of fine a good used one if thats even possible...and know cracks about my stupidness,,i will be kicking myself in the ass for hurting such a nice truck,,and is there a site on how to properly use these 4x4's and when its ok to ..i live in fla so i dont tk i will do any off road stuff but i get alot of flooding and figured it would be ok to drive in 4wd high range on the way to work..that about all//no mud just lots of water on highway..about 55 or 60 mph...please advice a explorer fan thats learning the hard way......thanks alot.......tony

well i just checked it again..looking for broken stuff or a major leak..everything looks good..so i started it and i have reverse ..but no forward gears in od but if i put it in just drive i have forward movement and it seem to shift ok.. but in od nothing but major slippage..in drive ok..so now what..?? it least i can save a tow bill to my tranny guy..lol...so again any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated..ps 4x4 hign and low still working.so i guess transfer case still ok......i guess..

Sorry to hear about your mistake. Looks like you just troubleshooted your own problem. The only thing to do now is to just take the transmission out and crack it open. However, your best option may just be to swap in another used transmission to get it running again for as less $$ and labor as possible.

still broke..well sort of....

thanks mike...so what happened to it?.what broke? like i said on od nothing** in drive it seens to be ok...well ok as i drove it around my apt complex..so bad converter or or overdrive in trans?...thansk again for the reply

I really can't tell you what inside of your transmission has broke. But I can tell you that there is a 99% chance that whatever did break, requires taking the transmission out and tearing it apart short of a complete rebuild.

You can search on the forum to learn how to re-torque your bands, but I really doubt that will help you.

The OD section uses a completely different planetary so it's not too surprising that you can use D even while OD is shot. This might even be okay with you, if you tow you have to use D anyway, and D isn't so bad for cruising at 65. Mileage will be lower and A/C won't be as cold but it's not a total loss.

is there a site on how to properly use these 4x4's and when its ok to ..i live in fla so i dont think i will do any off road stuff but i get alot of flooding and figured it would be ok to drive in 4wd high range on the way to work..that about all//no mud just lots of water on highway..about 55 or 60 mph...tony

Don't run it down a wet road at 55 or 60 with the 4 HI engaged. 4 wheel drive is made for offroad use. Use it on gravel, mud, dirt grass, ice and snow (probably not much of that around your area).

thanks all....!!

thanks to the guys who responded to my thread...i am still driving her back and forth to work and so far so good...she is shifting somewhat ok in drive and if i am cruising on the toll road on the way to work i can still shift it in overdrive and it will still engage as long as i the trans has shifted into high gear..if i am sitting at a stop light in od ..no go..so as long as i baby her maybe it will last for a bit till i get some overtime in at work...haha..its giong to cost me about 13 or 14 hundred to fix it at a good trans shop here in orlando but thats ok as long as it lasts a while..and in the mead time i will take all advise on how to drive it correctly in 4wd..thanks to you guys......dam what a costly mistake...well as they say..live and learn,,,,thanks again........

You could always try to tackle it yourself. There are some great posts on this forum explaining how to do it. The OD section is right in the front when you start taking it apart.

i would love to do the repair myself buy because i live in a condo now that would be out of the question...and if not do the repair on the trans it would be nice to save the labor to do so.but maybe next time..i have r and rrr the trans in my 79 stang several times here but it a five speed tremec and i can handle it myself w/o a transmission jack so as long as i am quite when i do it knowone is the wiser.(usually do it at night)..but no way i can handle this trans w/transfer case on..but thanks for the suggestion anway.....
