I have a 2000 Explorer Limited 65000 miles with the factory installed tow pkg. I just had an Class 3 hitch installed and tow a 3 ton (6000 pounds) boat.:( I want to put on new shocks. I have gotted several opinions on this and am very confused as to what to do. I am told I can put on regular heavy duty shocks, don't replace with regular shocks, pull the fuse on the compressor, and so on. I have to replace the back shocks for sure, but don't know what to do. Even Ford has given me differnt answers.

I'd go with a set of air shocks like these:

You can adjust them with compressed air for the load you are carrying.

These are not to be confused with off road air shocks made by Fox, King, SAW, etc.

I have a 2000 XLT 5.0L with the load leveling system, I assume that is what you have. The max towing capacity for that system is 8000 lbs according to the books, but I would not try that much wieght. If you do have load leveling, it should handle the 6000lbs. The greater concern is the tongue wieght, that is what can cause a problem. If the load leveling shocks need replaced, get ready for sticker shock. I am looking at all 4 wheels and its is around 600 with labor. The fronts are standard, the backs are salty, and are designed specifically for the tow package on the Ford Explorers.

If you eliminate the load leveling, you will need to add another leaf spring with the new shocks, or you might be dragging your rear end all the way to the lake with that heavy of a boat.

Some don't like the leveling system, I love it, but it appears that I can't lift my explorer with it remaining active. I have pull 6000lbs once with 150K miles on my explorer. It did it and the load leveling system kept the truck from sitting down. The problem I found was that the wheel base is so narrow, that it is not a smooth tow, otherwise not a problem. Most of my loads are between 2K and 4K.
