95 Explorer XLT 4x4
Hey all,
I took the 95 XLT 4X4 in and they replaced the left hub assy. Apparently unnecessarialy. which they refunded me the money and left the new part in. Cheers to Avenger guys as they are very professional.

They tell me that the Input Bearing is on its way out on the Transfer case. After much deliberaton and the ol stethascope. It is the same sound that they heard on one of thier newer Excursions.

Does anyone know if there was a recall on this from Ford?? As they have not had much luck with this Ford Werner X-Fer case??

Has anyone replaced this bearing? What would be a fair price, and is it something that is simple?

I apreciate the time and help this site has provided me. I just hope that this is the real problem and not another mis diagnosis..

:chug:

I have the same noise you are talking about and I know a few other people on this site do as well. I thought it was my left front bearing, but I haven't replaced it in fear that after $300+ I would realize the bearing wasn't the culprit. Did the shop give you an estimate?

Hub and Input Bearing Rplcmnt.

The Hub and Bearing Assembly was about $411 total for one side. THey replaced it and the noise was still there so they gave me a refund and left the new hub assy in.

The estimate from Ford was $570 for the Input Bearing in the t-case. This is a worst case scenario, if the Inner bearing is bad.

If the outer bearing is bad it will run about $150. The only way that my 4x4 shop could find that the noise was in the t-case was by putting it on the stand and running it and comparing it to a Expedition that was making the same noise (it was worse though)..

None of these are cheap and the only way to know for sure is with a good shop tech and a stethascope...

What kind of noise is it ?I would like to know if its similar to my noise, possibly associated with the transfer case.

The noise is a bit of a whirring. I got it back from Ford and they said that it was tire noise. I hope they are right so I will see when I get new tires.

I don't know who to believe the 4x4 guys or the Ford guys.

The sound is like a bearing out or a mud terrain tire noise though I don't have mudders.

Good luck I hope you can get a better answer than I got. Which is like "uh hell I dunno"..

does the sound keep getting louder and more constant the more you accelerate? cause that's what i'm hearing. i'm also feeling a vibration in the steering wheel. any ideas? cause i want to get rid of this problem PRONTO!
