New here and my question is the wife wants to buy a 04 mercury mountaineer v6 awd with 130,ooo miles. THe overdrive light comes on after 3 or 4 miles according to seller. He showed me a paper from a garage that says code ps 7144 he suspects torque converter. I have looked this up and came across a ton of websites talking about tranny problems and how they go and even after getting them rebuilt still go again .. THe suv is selling for 3,ooo I'm wondering if its worth it to buy or I'm thinking its just going to be problem after problem. Any input? THank you

If it were me I would not even go near it. My Mountaineer's tranny started to act up and my micanic advised me to sell it while i could get something for it because once they start to act up it is just down hill from there. IMO once a tranny is shot its shot. No matter how well its rebuilt it will still cause you troubles. 3,000 sounds nice but after the rebuilt of the tranny or a new one it will have you hurtin not to mention not having a car while its in the shop. I sold my Mountaineer for a grand and picked up a 00 explorer xlt for 5,000 with only 96k on it. The nice trucks are out there you just have to do some digging.
Good Luck either way!
