This 97 Sport (5 speed 4WD) is a bit of a project.

It snowed here on Friday and I had to shuffle it around to gain access to my garage. When I stepped on the gas, the rear wheels started to slip and I just expected the four wheel drive to kick in automatically. Instead, I got a huge shudder and no drive from the front wheels.

I put the switch on 4WD and still the same thing. Once I was rolling all was fine, until I stopped and started rolling again, while stepping on the gas, causing wheel slip. My driveway is on an incline and I was battling to get it back up. The banging continued as the rear wheels spun and finally, it seems like the front wheels finally caught and I was able to get up the driveway. I shut it down and went about my day.

I did a whole lot of searching, and nothing sounded as violent of a shudder as I am experiencing at low speeds in slippery conditions. I'm about to drop the trans for a clutch job, so any ideas that I can take care of while I'm in there would be greatly appreciated.

CV joint or bad t-case?

Did I mention that this is a serious banging and shaking with a nasty shudder? Just want to make that clear. Thanks. :D

My guess: Clutches in the TC and the main clutch are worn out (and probably broken springs on sun part). They engage and disengage steel-on-steel, no friction to smooth the action.
Being a 4WD (not AWD), most of the time you are diving it in 2WD (rear). So you won't notice those issues (including bad front axles).
