I want to install a flex fan onto my 2002 Explorer XLS. How do I remove the existing clutch/fan assembly. Looks like some kind of rod/stud extending out from water pump/pully with a large nut on it. I have performed this install on various other vehicles but have never encountered this type of setup. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Get the clutch fan tool from the Autozone Loaner tools collection. That's what all the Ford Trucks and maybe even the cars use.

great info.....

Thanks for the info Jeff. Went to Autozone website and found the specialty tool....after seeing the picture it makes more sense now. One other thing, read up on how clutch fans work and seems that there is or might be a wire hookup or something. Is this true? This wire is connected to a sensor in or on the radiator and when temp increases or decreases a bi-metalic switch opens or closes allowing more or less oil into spring in clutch assembly thereby causing fan to turn or freewheel. Thanks again.

It is a 2002 and you are working on it? I am sure if there is a problem it is under warranty. Just an idea.

flex fan

Yes It's a 2002.......Not broken or anything, just want to replace the OEM clutch style fan with the flex fan. Looking to improve fuel economy a little as well as getting rid of the fan noise.
