Greetings! I'm a new 2000 Explorer XLS owner. Back in 2013, another new user, NWTPilot, wrote the following old post:

"A regular OBD2 code reader cannot read transmission coding. The system is much more intricate than the definitive everyday control ideology. In order to apprehend those codes stored, you will need an intermediate code reader, made specailly for Ford transmissions."

He had purchased a '2000 Explorer XLT and was swapping transmissions.

So my question is this: I purchased a ScanGauge II with OBD functions built-in. Did I purchase a "regular OBD2 code reader" or an "intermediate code reader" (that can "read transmission coding")? I don't have a clue what distinctions there are between the two...

Update: I received this nice reply from the ScanGauge folks meanwhile
"The ScanGauge (II) will connect with all the standard OBDII protocols which include CAN, ISO, VPW, PWM, and KWP. The ScanGauge cannot communicate with SW-CAN or MS-CAN. These two protocols are used for different GM and Ford modules including ABS light, power steering, windows, radio, lights, etc. The CAN protocol was introduced in 2003 so the MS-CAN and SW-CAN ability on this other scanner would not apply to your 2000 Ford Explorer."

I'm not so sure that it actually is the reader that is important, but instead the software. I have a $10 reader from AliExpress, using crap software it was slow and couldn't read my P0741 transmission code, using ScanXL Pro, it was faster, and read transmission codes. That's just my experience, and maybe I got lucky with the chip that is inside my reader. From that perspective, your reader should be ok, especially since it actually has a name and branding.

In general, if the blurb of advertising accompanying a code reader on it's box says "Reads CAN, ABS Codes", it will read transmission codes. The key is "CAN Protocol" built in. If you want to test it for sure, disconnect one of the transmission speed sensors, drive it about a bit, should get a CEL, then attempt reading the code. imp

Hey y'all, I know this is a 9 month old post but I was looking for some kind of scan tool to use on my 2 '97s (Ex/Mo)and my '99 Ranger. Is it possible to read trans codes (as I recently saw a post asking) with this? and is it worth it or what?

Also I saw this one too will it do the same for far less money?

A code reader, or scan tool, must be able to read "CAN" protocol to read transmission and chassis codes. Not all scanners marked "OBD-II) will do this. Usually, the box the tool comes in is marked CAN capable, or the instructions for a particular tool will tell that. Most instruction manuals are available on line from the maker of the tool. Ask the sales person if the tool is CAN capable, if you look at a parts store. imp

CAN capable. OK got it . Thanks
