Hey Folks,
I have a 92 X, 5.5" Superlift, 33's, Warn manual hubs, factory 3.73's and limited slip.
I have an intermittent grinding noise, like the sound you get from shifting a tranny with worn synchromesh.
Most often it starts after hitting a bump or expansion joint at speed (>45 mph), and then is a steady grinding. With the hubs turned out, shifting the transfer case to 4 high while still moving seemed to resolve the problem, shifting the tranmission to neutral didn't solve the noise, so I took it in and the shop test drove it and concluded that the transfer case had some internal issue (as I also suspected)...
Decided that I would get two birds with one stone as my transfer case was the electric shift, but the shop wouldn't replace the electric shift with a manual one (we don't do "custom work"...), so I bought a rebuilt unit and did it myself.
No sweat, got it and the linkage in (much thanks for the posts on that subject!), and it ran good.
Until today, I got the same noise AGAIN. Shifting to 4 high didn't resolve the problem (hubs unlocked), it would only go away if I slowed to <5 mph.
Anyone have some advice? I'm out $700 on the transfer case, but it was a reliablity upgrade anyhow...
I have checked for rubbing and binding components, the U-joints I did recently, don't figure it's in the ring and pinion or axles because it's intermittent.
What about the Warn hubs, could they be binding?
Transmission? Ouch!
Much appreciated.
Malcolm
