Intermittent Rev counter 95 XLT

I have 1995 Explorer XLT the tach works intermittently. On start will not work, run about 5-10 miles check engine light comes on and tach works, where does it recieve signal from? any suggestions. Thanks

Rev counter? Do you mean the Tachometer? (RPM's)
