2002 Ex V6
I've had great luck with my 2002 V6 that I bought privately with lots of maintenance records.

Looking at a 2006 V6 from a dealer (trade in) that has no maintenance records and 75k miles. I've read about trans and engine issues with the timing chain.

Is a 2006 like this worth taking a chance on? It's hard to find a 4th gen here with everything like leather, class 3, reverse sensors in the colors I like.

Am I pushing my luck with another first model year?

I really don't think so. See if you can find out what ford dealership it was purchased at and they most likely have all the maintenance records for it, or you can run the title records on it and try contacting the original owner to see what records they have in a folder somewhere. I have had no major issues with my 06 V6 and wouldn't expect anything major on that one either. The trans and engine issues are primarily with the early 4th gen V8 models and as far as I know the timing chain rattle issue was resolved before the 4th gen V6 (I have not read/heard of anyone with the 4th gen. V6 having that problem other than 1 individual due to a bad engine assembly and fixed under factory warranty). I would look at the class III hitch for signs of regular use (scratched and rusted on the inside), if it has signs of use I would make sure that the transmission and transfer case have been flushed just to be on the safe side.
