So, my quest continues to find a decent used 2nd Gen explorer.
THis weekend, I looked at a 98 EB 5.0 AWD with 92k miles. Only real problems I saw was that some of the carpet was a little rough, the center console had a large rip in the leather. It did make a loud clunking noise from the right front end that sounded like an upper ball joint going bad and the driver's seat had issues going all the way forward so my wife couldn't reach the pedals. They are going to fix that and get back to me. Price is around $3800 from a small dealer with a 3 month power train warranty.
However, it did have an option I hadn't tested before. The Air Ride Suspension. Is this a problem waiting to happen? I tried searching for information on how it worked or how to verify proper operation. I did flip the switch and in 'normal' mode it seemed to be a little less rigid than 'off-road' mode. I'm assuming the small piston on the driver's side front control arm is just a sensor of some sort for this system? I didn't see it anywhere else on the car and haven't seen it on other explorers.
I'm continuing the search tonight looking at a 98 Mounty 5.0 without all the bells and whistles of the EB but with the same mileage and price. We'll see how it stacks up.
