Is my AWD going?

I'm wondering if my AWD is slipping. I own a 98 Explorer XLT V8 (duh), with 70,000 + miles. Today in the snow i noticed i was slipping and sliding much more than usual. I've been hearing a rattaling, like a piston, when i accelerate and move. If I am in nuetral and press on the gas there isn't any noise. I am also noticing lack of power and momentary lapse between the time i press on the gas and when i actully starting accellarating. Is there something wrong? Am i overly concerned about my baby? hmmm

i'm not sure if they were spinning, or not even moving. What ever it was the front wheels didn't seem to be moving or having any power, or traction to them
