Has anyone replaced their JBL sound system speakers with aftermarket units? I do not want to change the head unit, I just want to replace the front door speakers. I have one that crackles and I am afraid to ask what the factory replacement costs.

The stock speaker size for the Explorers are 6x8. There are many different choices for you:
Infinity 5x7/6x8 80-20k ($59-99)
JBL 5x7/6x8 50-20k ($79-119)
Pioneer 6x8 35-25k ($79-149)
Polk 5x7/6x8 60-22k ($69-99)
* The price ranges are to the fact that there are several models.

You can also make some modifications to the door to accept a different speaker size such as a 6.5,etc. However, this would probably require sending it to an audio shop, which would be a waste of money unless you are going into a sound-off competition.

The bottom line - I'm running the Pioneer 6x8's in my truck and I am very satisfied. It has the largest range compared to the other speakers. In addition, it doesn't require any mods. or outside installation help. You can do it yourself.

Hope this helps!

The JBL sound system speakers are different than normal speakers. Each speaker is in a big plastic box. I believe that each speaker has its own amplifier.

Paul- I just installed a set of Clarion 5x7/6x8 plates in the rear doors of my 92 last week. (I also have/had the premium stereo. I have the JBL's still mounted in the front doors and when I adjust the fader I can really notice the difference in clarity. The Clarions have more highs and mid-bass where the JBLs sound muffled compared to them. Don't get me wrong JBL makes a great speaker, but in this test the Clarions win, by a landslide. I plan on installing a pair of 6.5's in the front shortly as I already have JBL tweeters mounted up in the door panels by the mirrors, they are a perfect fit there.
