I've finally decided to start putting together the stuff I need to put a manual 4406 in my X. What i was wondering is what I need to be looking at when I start digging for the t/c and drive lines. I've picked a lot of little parts from the yards, but I've never gotten anything this dependant. What should I be looking at to avoid? If I can find out, what is considered high mileage on a manual t/c? Also once I grab what I want should I tear apart the t/c and clean everything or just drain it and put in synthetic? Thanks for any advice and info you guys can give me.

Look for a transfer case thats on a vehicle with normal tires on it (and no lift or other modifications). If it has oversized tires - part of its purpose was probably for off road which means theres a greater chance it has seen abuse.

Manual transfer case don't really go "out" as often as electric ones. Most of the time people don't have the need to shift the transfer case so the shift mechanisms aren't really used as often as say a transmission.

If you have the time and the know how, go ahead and tear it apart. Personally, I would change its fluid, install it and see what comes about :D

I like that ^^^ Thanks for the response. I should be able to tear it appart and reassemble it without much hasle. Besides it's not like I need it back together right away. I can stick it on the workbench, and take my sweet time. :D

I just bought a cheap case with a warranty, and then drained and filled. It's been 1 year and works great. Around here, cases, trannys, engines, etc are pulled from the vehicle before it's placed in the yard. The only info I had was year and milage.

That's nice, but doesn't that add quite a bit to the cost? Where I used to live if you picked it, it only cost like 30% of what they'd charge if you just bought it from them. I havn't been to the yards here, so I'll see how they do things in NW Florida.

It depends on the yard. I was able to get a t-case with all sensors and a shift motor for less than $200, and no need to jack up a truck in the junk yard dirt to weasel out a 100lb monster.

www.car-part.com is your best friend when sourcing parts like this.

Thanks for the tip, but it's a major pain in the butt to find the best price when it comes on several different years.

A Car-parts.com search is based off the part and will show compatible items from other models. For instance, I needed a rear knuckle for my Talon. I did a search and it listed parts from an Eclipse (Talon's sister car) and also off of an Avenger and etc. Same with my Explorer transmission. It listed 95's and 96's.

BTW V8 did you try to use the 4406 with the rear flange instead of the slip yoke? I saw that they made both, and I was thinking that maybe that if I used that one that I wouldn't need to change gas tanks. Just picking your brain. I'm still looking, but car-parts.com seems to be fairly expensive (atleast the ones close enough to drive to). Thanks again for all the input.

Section525 I believe did the same transfer case swap - you may want to send him a PM (so as to flood his Inbox :D) if you have detailed questions.

He actually did the 1354 swap using the AA stuff, the 4406 will actually bolt on, V8 did it with the electric shift, and actually got control trac out of it. He did a lot of research on it, and probably already looked into the flanged one.

Hmm... I did not know that the 4406 came with a rear flange. What vehicle was it used on?

One of the beauties of the swap is that I was able to use a Navigator slip style rear drive shaft, without any mods. However, there may be dual flange driveshafts that would fit, or a custom could certainly be made.

I'd love to explore this flanged 4406 further.

I'm not exactly sure where, but through out all my searching for the T/C I came accross a site that had the 4406 with and with out the rear flange, so I'm not entirely sure what it came on. If I find anything new out I'll be sure and post it.

I think it's a misprint. I believe they meant it was the 4407, which is on the f250 behind the 5.8, and E4OD, any clue what the output shaft of those is like?

It says 1996 F250 Non-Superduty, which does make sense. The non SD F250s are basically F150s with stronger leaf springs, however, the F250 in 1996 was the old body style, and I believe old drive-train as well.

Upon further research, the F250 non-SD was offered with:
Warner 1356 Man
Warner 1356 Elec
Warner 4406 Man
Warner 4406 Elec
Warner 4407 Man

The 4407 is a heavier duty case, used mostly behind the 7.3L diesel.

That leaves just one more question......will it bolt up to the 4R70W

All of those full size t-cases should bolt to the 4R70w, in fact, the 4R70w was/is? used in the F150/F250 non-SD.

The real questions are: 1) does a flange end 4406 exist, and 2) will it clear a 21 gal tank/clear the torsion bar x-member.

Ok I spent a few hours at work last night looking through all that I could find on the 4406, and 4407. You're right about it bolting up BUT I still can't find any demensions to compare it's size, and I don't know if it'll line up with the front d-shaft tunnel. Sorry there isn't a duel flanged 4406 :( but there is an electric 4407 out there too (even less info here). Next will be a few calls/ trip to the yards and get some sizes (T/C and d-shafts front and rear)

Also just fyi the 4406 came in different gear ratios per years not entirely sure what ratio was which year, but it seems to get lower (numerically higher) the newer they get. If you're curious the 4407 is 2.69-1. Another moot point....what the heck will i do for a spedo if the 4407 works???
